Guidelines for Virginia LPC

  •  Licensed Professional Counselors: The Virginia Board of Counseling requires that licensed professional counselors shall be required to have completed a minimum of 20 hours of continuing competency for each annual licensure renewal. A minimum of two of these hours shall be in courses that emphasize the ethics, standards of practice or laws governing behavioral science professions in Virginia. The full regulations can be found here. Professional development requirements for LPCs are outlined at 18VAC115-20-106. Continuing competency activity criteria.
  • Licensure Whether you are seeking licensure for the first time or planning to relocate, a new website, www.counselor-license.com, provides information and requirements to become a licensed professional counselor for all states. Counselor Educators may find this to be a useful resource to share with clinical mental health students. The website provides additional information about counseling specialties, accreditations, degree programs, and job postings.
  • Licensure for School Counselors: The Virginia Department of Education regulates the licensure of School Counselors, pre K-12. The standards for licensure, and the renewal of licensure are coverd in the full regulation for Licensure Regulations for School Personnel can be found here.
